There is no more important skill, then that of human connection.  As a Human Resources specialist, putting the “human” back in Human Resources, has been my forever quest.  Putting the human back has everything to do with networking and networking (simply put) equals net worth.  So, when I am asked:

  • how do I get a job, my answer is network;
  • when I am asked, how do I change my job, my answer is network;
  • when I am asked, how do I keep my job, my answer is network.

Although this seems like a simple answer, not so.  Networking is more than having hundreds/thousands of likes or hits.  Networking is about connecting with people and knowing how to call on them to make a connection with someone for someone else’s benefit.  So how do you turn this not so simple answer to an almost simple task?

  • Make 1-3 or more connections per week (by phone or in person);
  • Connect to gain experience and ease with yourself (rationale in beginning to find yourself and career);
  • Connect to gain support and professional collateral (rationale to maintain present status and build future added value);
  • Connect to give back (rationale to leave a better working environment and world).

Networking Tips include:

  • Keep genuine.
  • Refer to goals so that you can pick and join groups that will help you get what you are looking for.
  • Visit as many groups as possible that spark your interest.
  • Hold volunteer positions in organizations.
  • Ask open-ended questions (who, what, where, when and how).
  • Become known as a powerful resource for others.
  • Have a clear understanding of what you do and easily articulate it to others.
  • Be able to articulate what you are looking for and how others can help you.
  • Follow through quickly and efficiently on referrals you are given.
  • Call those you meet who may benefit from what you do and vice versa.
